Paris it lures travelers for the same reasons it always has. You'll still find grand old sights like the Tour Eiffel, Notre-Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, Sacre-Coeur, and all those atmospheric cafes. If you enjoy trendy new projects check out the Grand Arche de La Defense, the Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie, the Cite de la Musique, and the Bibliotheque Franois-Mitterrand. Don't forget the parks, gardens, and squares; the Champs-Elysees and other grand boulevards; and the river Seine and its quays. Paris' beauty is still overwhelming, especially in the illumination of night, when it certainly is the City of Light.
Both the capital of the nation and of the historic Īle de France region, Paris is located in northern central France, 265km (165mi) south-west of Brussels, 295km (185mi) south-west of Luxembourg and 510km (315mi) west of Stuttgart. The city center - known as Intra-Muros, or within the walls - is bisected by the River Seine.
Paris' weekly entertainment pamphlets, Pariscope and L'Officiel des Spectacles, list up-to-date information in French on every imaginable outdoor activity. Look for listings on hiking in groups, biking, rock climbing, plus parachuting, canoing, squash, tennis and swimming, and others. Among uniquely Parisian activities, it's hard to beat drifting lazily down the Seine (or the Marne, the Oise or any of the city's canals) in a canal boat. Rentals are available year-round.
